Training Methodology
Big Brain Barbell supports three program types:
Strength — Phase-based periodization (Hypertrophy → Strength → Peaking) with exercise-focused goals across 6 movement patterns.
Bodybuilding — Pure hypertrophy focus with muscle-group goals targeting 15 different muscles.
Powerbuilding — A hybrid approach combining phased exercise goals with constant muscle-building goals.
Each week, Big Brain Barbell evaluates your post-session readiness check-ins, session feedback, and performance trends to decide whether to increase volume (+10%), maintain, reduce (-10%), or prescribe a deload (50% with RPE cap). The system is conservative by design — it's quicker to reduce volume than increase it, keeping you progressing safely over the long term.
See the Adaptation System guide for full details.
Volume landmarks define the range of productive training volume for each muscle group:
MV (Maintenance Volume) — Minimum sets to maintain current muscle.
MEV (Minimum Effective Volume) — Minimum sets to stimulate growth.
MAV (Maximum Adaptive Volume) — The sweet spot for most people.
MRV (Maximum Recoverable Volume) — Most you can recover from.
Big Brain Barbell uses these to keep your training in the productive range and learns your personal landmarks over time.
Yes. Big Brain Barbell is designed to work for lifters at any level. The app uses volume landmarks and weekly adaptation to calibrate your training automatically — starting conservatively and adjusting based on how you respond. You don't need to label yourself as a beginner or advanced lifter; the system meets you where you are.
Yes — this is exactly who Big Brain Barbell is built for. The reason most people program hop is that they stall and don't know how to adjust. Big Brain Barbell handles volume and intensity adjustments automatically, and guides you through phase transitions based on your performance and readiness. You stay on one program that evolves with you, instead of restarting from scratch every few weeks.
Programs you find online are static — they don't know how you're responding. If you have a bad week, the program doesn't care. If you're crushing it, the program doesn't push harder. Big Brain Barbell is different because it adjusts every week based on your actual readiness, session feedback, and performance trends. It's a living program, not a spreadsheet.
Using the App
Yes. Big Brain Barbell comes with a built-in exercise library, but you can also create custom exercises. During program creation, exercises are selected based on your available equipment. You can configure your bars, plates, dumbbells, and machines in Settings.
Yes. You can reschedule sessions to different days or skip them entirely. The adaptation system takes missed sessions into account when adjusting your next week's programming.
For each set, you log the weight and reps completed. Optionally, you can log RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion). After each session, a check-in asks about your sleep quality, readiness, and session RPE. The app also tracks rest time between sets automatically.
